History Brief:
On 17 March 1685/6, the proprietors of Stratford made the �Shepaug Purchase� from the Potatuck Indians to establish Woodbury and surrounding towns. In May 1731, Woodbury was divided into Ecclesiastical Societies and the most southerly was called Southbury Society. This was made the town of Southbury by the Act of 1787. Town vital records begin 1787. Barbour collection records cover 1787-1830.
