This area was settled as part of Franklin to the west and Lisbon to the east. Settlement started about 1700 and was part of the Society of Hanover established May 1761. In July 1856, William Sprague of Cranston, Rhode Island, purchased 300 acres on the Shetucket River and laid the foundation of a great cotton mill. In 1861 the new town was incorporated and named, Sprague, for its founder. Town vital records begin 1861.
