History Brief:
Roger Ludlow laid out the town in 1639. It was the 7th plantation established in CT and was called Pequannock until 1640, then Cupheag until 1643 and finally, Stratford. Stratford is located on the Housatonic River 1.5 miles from Long Island Sound and 14 miles from New Haven. The land was not purchased from the Indians but was claimed by right of conquest of the Pequots. Stratford was never a part of the New Haven Colony but always under the Connecticut Colony at Hartford; although it did not send a representative to the General Court until 1642. Stratford originally included present towns of Bridgeport and Trumbull. Town vital records begin 1639. Barbour collection records cover 1639-1840.
