History Brief:
Massachusetts claimed this area as part of their boundary line run in 1642. This section was called Stoney River when some land was granted by Massachusetts in 1660. The area was later known as Southfield and in 1674 it was named Suffield (which is how Southfield had always been pronounced). Suffield was incorporated as a town in March 1682. A new survey in 1713 still gave this land to Massachusetts. Suffield along with Enfield, Woodstock, and Somers, petitioned in 1747 to become part of the Connecticut Colony. In May 1749 they were admitted. Town vital records begin 1670. Barbour collection records cover 1674-1850.
