History Brief:
This area was part of the Western Lands (Goshen, Colebrook, Kent, Hartland, Norfolk, Canaan, Cornwall, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Barkhamsted, Harwinton, Winchester and New Hartford) made over to Hartford and Windsor in 1686 to save them from being taken by the Royal Gov. Andros. The land which is now Harwinton was divided by a 1726 settlement with the western half going to Windsor and the eastern to Hartford. The first settlers established themselves at Waramaug's Reserve about 1731. The residents petitioned the General Court in 1735 to be granted town privileges, as, they stated they already had a Minister, but the Court did not act on this petition until October of 1737, when Harwinton was granted both Town and Parish privileges. The name is said to derive from the names HARtford and WINdsor. A portion of Harwinton was incorporated in Torrington in 1927. Town vital records begin 1737; the Town Clerk reports that records before 1854 mat be "scattered". Barbour collection records cover 1737-1854.
