History Brief:
On 10 October 1668 the General Assembly granted Sergeant Richard Beckley of New Haven 300 acres on the Mattabasett River. The first settlement was at the Great Swamp in 1686. The settlers had to walk 10-12 miles to Farmington to attend church. To relieve this, the Second Society of Farmington was established in 1712 and in 1722 the Parish of Worthington was formed. In 1785, the town of Berlin was established on land taken from Wethersfield, Farmington and Middletown. Town vital records begin 1850. Barbour collection records cover 1785-1850.
