History Brief:
In a 1715 Town Meeting in Hartford, a committee was appointed to treat with the Indians for the purchase of the lands about Bantam Lake in concert with Windsor. In 1718, a company was formed to settle the Plantation of Bantam. In May 1719, the General Assembly bestowed the name, Litchfield to the area. When the county bounds were set in 1751, Litchfield became the County Seat. In May 1818, the central area was chartered as the Village of Litchfield and on 21 March 1879 this became the Borough of Litchfield. Bantam was incorporated at as borough in 1915. Government of the two boroughs is by warden and burgesses. The southwestern portion of the Town was incorporated into the Town of Washington in 1779, and in 1859 the Town of Morris was formed of lands in the south of Litchfield. Town vital records begin 1719. Barbour collection records cover 1719-1854.
