History Brief:
This land was settled about 1755 by inhabitants of Stratford. These settlers belonged to the First Society of Huntington until May 1762 when they were constituted the Society of New Stratford. New Stratford Society was separated from Huntington and incorporated as the town of Monroe in 1823; named for the fifth President of the United States. Town vital records begin 1823. Barbour collection records cover 1823-1854.
